Hi,
Was looking to start a basic welding course soon, with the intention of being able to fix my own cars, vans, machinery etc, and to be able to fabricate some basic things.
I was looking at a MIG course as it seems the most versitile for what I'll be doing (everything with steel I think). It's looking like I might not be able to do the course, and my landrover has just failed it's MOT on 5 bits of basic welding, so it's looking like I might be teaching myself! Doesn't worry me too much, and I've got a friend who's seen a lot of mig done and use to do a lot of welding 20+ years ago so he can help.
I currently don't have a budget in mind, but be good to not spent millions.
Are there any affordable brands that are well made and will last well? What kind of amperage should I be looking at? Current jobs to do are thin steel bodywork and a Landrover chassis, and very much doubt I'd ever need to weld anything thicker than 5mm.
The other option is to do a basic TIG course, and teach myself mig.
I think you can get combined mig and tig machines, are they any good? Are they very expensive?
Any help would be great.
Thanks, Charlie.
