...and i am looking for a 120v machine that can handle both flux and solid core wire.
the initial use is a project involving a uni-body car. however i want to keep this unit for a while so i am looking for some versatility. the only catch is it has to be 120v input maximum. where i live i cannot run any 220v lines because my breaker box is full and maxed out. it would cost thousands to install a new panel and sub panel in my garage.
i have researched a few machines however i cannot decide between them.
Lincoln 3200HD:
Availability:
very hard to get at a bargain. eBay has a few and they do show up on craigslist from time to time. Also Home Depot is changing out their stock and will be getting rid of the 3200HD Demo units. i am trying to work with a local store however finding the right person to talk to is getting difficult.
Pros:
-even if purchased brand new these unit are very affordable.
-everything needed for gas welding comes in the retail box.
-everyone i talk to that owns a Lincoln is very happy with it.
-this model in particular gets a lot of good reviews.
-Available locally from my Home Depot.
Cons:
-very few units available locally meaning shipping will average $60-70.
-i have never used a Lincoln and am unfamiliar with the brand.
-finite voltage control.
Millermatic 140
Availability:
Local retail outlets that carry this model want to charge above MSRP (above $700). online retailers are selling this model for about $590 with free shipping.
Pros:
-I learned to MIG weld on a Miller.
-All of the professional shops that i have asked love Miller.
-Millers have an incredible reputation for longevity.
-Comes ready to use shield gas right out of the box.
-infinite voltage control
Cons:
-Very expensive on a tight budget.
-Haven't been able to find many reviews for this model. (Maybe i am looking in the wrong place, suggestions?)
-Parts seem to be rather expensive.
has anyone used either of these units? what are their strengths, weaknesses? thanks in advance!
