Yes I do then it seems to go all out the window when I start welding, I suspect its one of these that will just get better with time and practice, and learn to manage my coordination better. Thanks for the encouragement.Big improvements, keep it going. Torch angle!
Do you do a dummy run to see if it’s comfortable to hold a tight arc with good torch angle?
Got the sherman out and finished setup for a play today, didn't realise how much bigger the sherman is in comparison to the lorch.
Without meaning to sound all deep and philosophical I reckon it is more that the Lorch is so laughably small rather than the Sherman being so much bigger..?! My Lorch comes inside when it isn't being used as there's an awful lot of value in something so small; still worth every penny though!
It really makes it obvious when you see them next to each other... the Sherman in itself is one of the smaller TIG sets! It amazes me that in the same size case they do the 3phase 200 amp MMA set. A 32amp red plug is half of the size of the machine!Without meaning to sound all deep and philosophical I reckon it is more that the Lorch is so laughably small rather than the Sherman being so much bigger..?! Trick him into getting his other half something expensive..? Gives him/you free reign to be easily coerced into it...I keep thinking of ways to get my brother to sell his (perfectly fine) IFL to buy a Micortig for reasons...
Cheers for the tip munkul I will try that. Yeah it is pulling in some crud from somewhere, I have cleaned the plates free of mill scale and rust with a poly disk before work. Finally managed to get some acetone (took 5 months for my local industrial supplies to get a 5 ltr can) so may have to try giving all the parts a wipe down before welding and see if that improves things.Robbie - nice to see the improvement in pictures over time
You're pulling some crud through from somewhere in some of those runs, and I can't work out where... if it was just some little touchdowns it wouldn't look as contaminated. Are you cleaning off all the paint and rust?
Other than that, it's looking good... if you want to avoid the melt-through/saggy ends, you'd weld the last 10mm first, while it's cold, then start at the beginning and weld up to and tie-in to the end.

Cheers tangledfeet I'll give that a go and see if it works better, yes I know what you mean the plates sometimes have a blueish streak over them ounce I have used the poly disk on them. Cheers for the offer I may take you up on it if I'm struggling to find some again, though may have to check ebay first next time.I've got a couple of poly discs and they can, in my experience, leave some 'poly' behind - if you know what I mean? Maybe just me. My preferred method of cleaning metal before TIG welding is a grinding disc; they last longer than flap discs - and it was something that the lecturer that ran the TIG welding evening course got me onto. I always give a good wipe with acetone too; I bought mine on eBay - if I'd know it was that hard to get it wherever you are I'd have bought some and just got them to deliver to you!
Long waiting list had to wait a year. Cost is £13 a week or so if I remember correctly.Out of interest what kinda rent do you pay for a council lockup in Fort William and are they easy to get a hold of?
