Me and my brother are gonna get into welding and are not sure whether to start with a cheaper flux core 90 amp welder or go for a litter pricier MIG 170 amp welder that can use gas or flux core. Any thoughts?
Those cheap gasless welders under 130A are usually near useless. Not enough power, poor wire feed, high minimum current and sold by box movers that will not provide support.
Gas is cheap once you purchase a bottle. Flux wire is expensive, messy, hard to see and too hot for thin metal.
Go with a name brand welder; there is a lot of cheap ones that become door stops as people give up on them..
I've found that having a machine that has both gas and flux is very helpful. I would splurge on this one and go for what is going to benefit you the most in the long run, which would be the mig.
