Landed on a little transformer welder at the car boot this morning, have only ever migged before!
Every time in the past that I tried arc welding I got the rod stuck EVERY time I tried to strike it up. Fortunately my next door neighbour is a plater/welder so I got him to come round and give me a few pointers.
This is what he set up for me to start with, the good welds are his
The bird poo is mine
Btw his welds were done one handed and out of position so he could show me what he was doing...
I decided to just make a bead pad just to practice keeping my arc length constant, results were a bit hit and miss as my mask kept playing up because I was outside in the sun...
This last one was me trying to burn a full rod.
I was running 3.2 Clarke rods @ 130-135 amps on 10mm plate. The rods came with the welder. I stuck em in the oven for 20 mins as the box was open and I had no way of knowing how they had been stored.
I think i was getting the hang of it towards the end but I blew the fuse in the welder for the second time and didn't have any more 13A fuses left and I CBA to go fetch any more...
Please let me know what you think, for a first go I don't think I did too badly and my next door neighbour says it's just going to take practice.
