Hi all, I have been lurking for a while and got load of great info, so thx for that, but now I have a coulpe of questions.
My first welding project is to replace the rear body cross member on my discovery, Not the easiest job to begin with I know.
I have got the old one mostly out and I'm preping the existing body metal ready to weld the new one in. The issue I have is that after lots of paint stripper and wire brushing I still have bits of metal that are black rather than silver, along the edge of the boot floor and bottoms of the d-pillars. They are hard and shiny and cannot be removed with a wire wheel on a drill so I am assuming they are darker bits of metal.
Can I weld to this stuff or do I need to cut it out? I hope I can weld to it as there lots of it.
Before you answer, I know there is lots of rust to cut out still but I ran out of cutting discs so started prepping the bits I could whilst waiting for more discs to arrive.
My other question is that my new cross-member arrived unpainted from ymr metals so I primed it in grey to stop it rusting. Do I need to remove this before welding and if so how do I then repaint the bottom when it in place as it will be about 10mm from the deisel tank?
Any advice appreciated.
