Hi,
I'm sure this has been asked a thousand times but here goes...
I have just bought myself a 40 year old fiat X1/9 to restore, (midlife crisis), as expected it requires a fair bit of welding.
I am new to welding, as a refrigeration engineer I have a lot of experience brazing with oxy/acetylene, but have never welded.
I'm looking to buy a MIG welder, it will only be used for car work so no real requirement to weld anything over 3mm, I have an account with BOC for my oxy/acetylene so gas and safety equipment aren't an issue.
Portability is not a concern as it will rarely leave my garage, my only real limitation is it must operate from a 13A socket, it would be difficult to get a 16A feed to my garage.
Cost wise i was hoping for something under the £300 mark but that is purely for the machine, PPE and consumables are covered.
A lot of people are saying go used, unfortunately as I haven't yet welded it would be difficult for me to try anything before buying.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Mark
