Well,
After purchasing a second hand mig almost 6 months ago weather, job and family commitments finally mean that I have a couple of hours where I can start trying my hand at melting some metal. First attempt was on something like .6-0.8mm metal? Cebora 130 a disposable (Argon) cylinder set wide open and the wire which fed well despite having been on the machine" for years" according to the last owner.
There was some real bird splatter stuff on the first pass. I have a auto darkening helmet and it was set on slow. so I could see the ark strike in full colour. Panic! Right so now the helmet`s been sped up and turned down and I can see what I am trying to do.
So I have another 3 or 4 runs and take a view. You will see these on the shadow picture on the far right. Non shadow picture ditto. Small blobs of weld and the metal seemed to have melted through. Over these runs wire became a bit of an issue and was turned down. At the end of the weld there was a good few inches protruding. But then on the last one there was a ball of metal within the shroud, too slow I think so back up a bit.
The next 4 runs are on the other side and to be honest I`m not unhappy with them. They are not going anywhere and whilst not pretty seem reasonably solid, I`d guess that no3 I was probably a bit slow travelling. It was at this point that the old wire ran out and I replaced it with a new reel. I figured that I would try some 2mm steel as well, which I will not show - even I have standards, it gives splatter new meaning even though the rig was turned up.
I then figured that I`d see what happened when I left the higher settings on and we have the middle three or four verticals and showing blow through etc.
Any hints - tips
