Hi Guys,
Just thought I would share this with you and again offer thanks to those who have given help and advice along the way.
If anyone read my first posts I had wanted to learn to weld and needing some new gates hoped that I could learn to weld and that the cost of materials and purchase of the welder would be less than having these made, with the bonus that I would have the welder at the end of the process.
All in including gas, welder, paint, discs, hacksaw blades etc these have cost me approximately £800. They stand six foot tall and are 10 foot wide, I got lucky with the top rails as I got these from a mate from his old gates and extended them to suit. Unfortunately the actual gate posts are a little further apart than I had wished but the discovery of a water main after I had concreted in the first post dictated this !, anyhow lesson learnt, dig both holes first in future. They seem ok but I am worried that the hinges are at the end of there limits however I shall see how they go and if neccessary I can always cut them off and weld some spacers onto the posts.
I have thoroughly enjoyed making these apart from painting them, yuk, welds were made first on off cuts so I could get the settings right and ensure good penetration. and a pair of ladders on two workmates became my welding table. I made the outer frame first then infilled as I went along with a coat of red oxide in between to stop them from rusting as they were made over a period of a few months as and when time allowed. I can now see why they are costly to have made as it took some time to set them out and theres a lot more work involved than I originally thought. Some pictures attached and thanks again to everyone who contributes to the forum which has enabled me to complete my first project.
