Hi..
Tig welding a couple of collars to snuggly fit but still be able to slide, for some 50mm square x 400mm x 3mm square mild steel box section ..
The collars are 3mm thick and made up from 4 single sides to construct the collar/square box to slide over the 400mm length..
Before someone suggests it no, sadly i don’t have any stock that will already do this, so, i have no choice but to make it..
My issue is… if i allow too much space / free play when welding the collar it’s too sloppy, but if i go for a good fit up prior to welding it’s nips up tight and won’t slide over the stock length..
Is the anything i can use as a removable heat shim to deflect heat away when i weld it.. ? I’ve tried welding the collar where it’s tacked up over the stock piece and then welded, whilst in situ and i’ve tried it seperate, eg not sleeved over the stock piece when welding..
Thanks Noods…
