Hi,
I just wondered if any sparkies would make sure I'm working this out correctly. I am going to consult with a qualified electrician when I am ready, but I just want to have a reasonable idea of what I need.
I will be having a garage wired up in the new house to accommodate my welder, air compressor and all the other crap I have to go in there. Trying to work out what armoured cable I need as well as the MCB's etc. I have:
6A MCB for Lighting Circuit (strip lights x 2 ) (1.5mm Cable)
32A MCB for Ring Main in garage (2.5mm Cable)
I have a GYS SmartMig 162 fitted with what the manual says is a 16A plug, although to me it looks like normal 13A plug. I plan to fit a 16A commando Socket to it in the garage. This will be on a 16A MCB - I assume this is OK on 2.5mm Cable to this single socket given 2.5mm can take up to 20A
I then have a Clarke Raider 100 compressor that has no plug (how it arrived). The Manual says fuse rating 13A so I am presuming that this needs to be on a standard 13A fused plug. Its a reasonably hefty piece of kit so on its own 16A breaker on 2.5mm Cable
That is a total potential load of 70A
Our fitter suggested that a 10mm SWA cable should be enough, protected by a 50A MCB as the chance of everything being at full load at any point will be minimal.
However I want to make sure I have enough for if I need a bigger welder as I'm sure I will once i get into it a bit more.
Is 10mm SWA going to be enough to cope with it? or should I put in 16mm just to be sure - but 16mm does seem like one hell of a lump of cable but I'd rather do it now than have to do it again in a few years. The distance is only about 10 meters or so.
Thanks for your help in advance
