Old ones totally knackered, been plated and bodged for the last 20 odd years, my job was to oxy cut the old ones off and fit the supplied new ones, and fab/weld a handrail in place.
Step 1 beat all the old rust off so the torch had some steel to work on
Step 2 hammer the hell out of the remains
Step 3 fit and bolt up steps
Step 4 find some scrap pipe and make handrail
Step 5 some quality welding to hold it altogether!
None of it pretty, but remit was strong/quick and cheap or in this case free.
Apparently this dry dock barge was one of the ones that were filled with gravel and sunk to be used as an anchor when they built the London Eye.
