We want to try grinding and scraping a lathe bed. I've located a cheap, used bed to practice on, but need a flat surface to register the high/ low points, main wear areas etc. We have no surface plate, and ideally we'd have a camel back straight edge a couple of inches wide for marking with prussian blue. But they're expensive and the ones I've found are a long way away from South Wales.
Sooo.... I wondered about buying three 150 x 7000 mm granite worktop offcuts (that would reach across both slideways on our Myford) and making a flat surface on one, using the other two to lap (as per various youtube vids). How accurate can DIY ones be made using that method? Accurate enough to correct uneven wear on lathe slideways?
Thanks for any advice.
Chris
