It's said that the police are getting much more active on it now (and they've resurfaced it since my younger and crazier days!). Ducati 900SS (bevel drive). I think my offences on that are outside the statute of limitations, now. Must get another Duke................

brazing's used a lot on (some at least) modern cars, heat input and fancy steels. Strength of brazing alloys can be similar or a fair bit higher than plain ol' mild steel but, as said, joint type plays an important role as the weak link is the bond between the two alloys

Back in the days when real mini's were about, the object of de seaming was to stop rust getting to the poor spot welds. 20 or 30 years ago the standard filler rod for car body work was sif bronze a lot stronger than spelter, but did look pretty much the same. I seem to remember bike frames being brazed. I know that BSA brazed all their frames, I'm not sure but I think even the Feather bed was brazed.

All true, but I'm not so sure about the sifbronze as standard filler rod 20 years ago. I was using MIG and gas welding with steel rod and most of my contemporaries saw brazing as a difficult and even dangerous practice on old cars (mainly because it copes so badly with rust), although useful for seam "welding".
It's true it was a common practice on bike frames and persisted amongst some specialists right up until the advent of the aluminium frame, but that is partly down to the use of chrome moly tubing.
It really is down to the type of joint. Staniforth (who brazed his own hillclimb frames) tells a story of an inappropriate brazed repair leading to his son having a potentially fatal crash.

Hi All,
I have used brazing quite a lot in the past and as long as used correctly is excellent.
If used on well fitting joints allowing the brass be drawn in by capillary action this method is strong,neat and quick.

Not for structural sections of a car body though !!
The Mini body is held together by those external spot welded flanges which he has ground away
this is OK provided you weld the seam back up MIG/Gas/or Tig to put the strength back in the join,any slight imperfections left after the welded joint is cleaned up could be filled with braze then after a clean up a skim of good quality flexible body filler.Brazing although strong is only a ' hard ' solder joint and ' welding ' is the joining of the parent metals.
I did read somewhere a guy ground all the joints away on his Mini and just filled with filler,he then reversed his car down the driveway to take it for M.O.T , when the driveway met the road the angle changed sharply and the car fell to pieces

CCM were still brazing frames together for motocross upto 1982/1983. As Fingers said, the frames were chrome moly so welding was not practical at that time. The CCM in my album is a 1978 model and is brazed beautifully - I braze a fair bit but don't get anywhere near the quality look of those frames. I think it was Mike Eatough who made them for CCM.

am going to be doing an apprenticeship at norton motorcycles and they tig and braze there frames and petrol tanks ect which are made from ally.
Will be interesting to see the pics. No idea why they're still brazing (in fact, I though they'd vanished). I really can't see any point in brazing aluminium (unless it's maybe to hold spigots in place, which would be easier than TIG or popping filler necks on tanks).
Take them up on it quick -- in the present climate I think they'll really struggle.

just wait till you see the new bike coming out its out of this world
As I remeber from the old days
the idea was to do the brazing from the inside. Where the two panels are folded to create the flanges that join together and meet, creates a lovely valley to fill with brass. As long as the panel is really clean the brass flows in beautifully meaning that most of the outside seam can be removed. Most of the old tubular race car chassiss were butt jointed and brazed. A guy from ferndown invented a device called a "gas fluxer" for that specific purpose.
gotta love brazing.
