If acess allows perhaps the optimum solution is to weld it as he had done then bolt a plate over the top giving the strength of the plate idea without the added stresses of new HAZ areas
Surely the hole will be a bigger weakener?
I remember something from my prentice days about drilling holes for stress relief, then there was something else about plates and nuts n bolts and torque settings and stress and torsion thingys being transferred.
Problem with the above though is that was yonks ago and my memory is a bit vague on it, plus, the instructor wore a wig so I paid more attention to see if it was going to slip,also, mini skirts had just come into fashion so you were forever rubber necking at the tottie outside.
So, I think holes are possibly sometimes beneficial but that needs commenting on by someone who knows wot they are talking about-so that excludes me from further input.
