Hi all,
I’m currently working on a project that requires me to compress some 1 inch OD 1.6mm thick mild steel bar.
I’m trying to get a finish like the image below so I can weld some steel rod on the end (this isn’t exactly what I’m trying to weld, but it’s the closest I can find that’s a clear enough image).
I know you can heat it up and whack it with a hammer, but I’ve got a few of these to do (4) and will be doing this at home- and I know that sort of thing will annoy my neighbours.
I’ve heard you can use a hydraulic press to do this, but obviously there are many different kinds (strength/weight) of them, so I was wondering if any of you had any idea of what would be an appropriate size. I’ve found a relatively cheap press on Amazon (I only plan on using this a few times so longevity isn’t really that much of an issue, but such a press would be nice to have should I ever need it again) but it’s four tonne. Would this be sufficient for my needs? Has anyone tried this before and can give me any pointers?
