Clarke parts bender and 16mm bar

I need to bend some 16mm round bar into hoops for a fence repair & gate, unfortunately they are not standard parts so will need to be made

think I will be able to bend then with a 104mm (52 radius giving 120 centres to uprights) circle in a Clarke parts bender?.... not got any 16mm to try it with

i dont think ive tried 16mm bar in it before,

though i have done 10mm or 12mm on a 20 and 25 radius.

so the hoop will fit over 40mm and 50mm box sections.

for ratchet strap hook points on a bike trailer.

You will have to look at the Radius of the dies for hoop rails. If there isn't many I should go for a former and heat. In fact if you haven't bottles or a forge I should send them out rather than fork out on the machine as cheap as they are to buy you still have it sitting around afterwards

Heat and former will be the way to go with this job.

The Clarke Parts bender is not man enough for the job.......... I know because I have tried to bend 16Ø MS bar in one and failed

My manual JD2 bender will do 16Ø MS bar in the 5/8" X 2 & 1/4" (57.2mm)CLR die making for a finished piece bent to 180° at 4 & 1/2" (114.3mm) CLD + 5/8" or 5 & 1/8" overall width (130mm).

A crossbow type pipe bender will do the job if a bit slow. How many do you need to do.
Another option is to make a steel former of the correct diameter, bolt it to a convenient post and pull the 16mm bar round cold if you have enough overhang as a lever or slide a piece of pipe over the end to give you the leverage.

I already have the bender, just no 16mm to try, Was thinking I could heat & bend but obviously don't want to if not necessary.

As its only half a dozen or so I may see about getting them done.... any of the chester/Wirral/north wales crew got something suitable for the job?

For just 6off is it worth even getting in the car if you have heat available?

It don't need be fancy could be anything from a suitable diameter log held in the vice to some plate with a bit of flat bent round bit by bit and welded on top

Yes to be honest that's what I did when I had a few to do but there were considerably more of them.

hard call really, not worth it for half a dozen or more than 50......

I reckon it would manage 16mm hot rolled bar, the stuff with a black oxide layer.
If not I know a tool that would do it.

Not a cheap one unfortunately.
The Metalcraft Powerbender will do 20mm bar at a price.
I made this playing about with mine

That looks ok but maybe not for hoop rails? Always thought their stuff overpriced for what / how its made personally but that don't look to bad at all on that radius

I've done 16mm bar in a Clarke bender so you'll be fine mate.
Put an extension bar on for extra leverage.

found an offcut while tidying the workshop....






75mm former... so yes you can bend 16mm will be even easier round a 120mm form, just need to find an offcut big enough to turn up

didn't need anything longer than the standard handle either.... bit of an effort but I only need a few

I'd fire up my charcoal BBQ with plenty of charcoal bed and slip the bars in the thing . Even if you can only manage a dark cherry red heat on them you'll easily be able to wind the hot bar round a chicken wire reinforced concrete filled plant pot set on a square bar that's now held in a vice . Once you have the coils made let them cool and then cut them circular with a disc cutter. Now you can either go for the reheat again ( I would ) set them back in the vice to knock them into alignment or do it cold .
