after a bit of advice, had my clarke 90en for a good few years and it has served me very well, but recently it developed a fault, the torch is now live as soon as you switch it on, used to be live when you pressed the trigger, all help much appreciated

Yep make sure someone has to hand a broom handle to push you off the m/c should you touch something live!!. Any how if you do poke your fingers inside make sure you have unpluged it. Then when testing With power on keep one hand in you pocket that way the other hand is on the tourch to operate the trigger and you wont make a circuit through yourself. While operating the trigger look at the relay to see if it click over then back when trigger released.
