Chickens

Hi ,
I am gonna get myself some chickens for the garden so I have to build a decent house and run for them, so what I need chaps is some info regarding light duty weld mesh ie sheet sizes and hole sizes, suppliers etc. Its got to be fox proof,the chicken house is no a problem just the run,I hope to have a run approx 16x10 ft ish and about 6 ft tall completely enclosed in mesh,it will be framed with 1x1" box/angle all advice welcome not to many chicken jokes please--- unless they are funny!

FH Brundles do a pet mesh bit stronger than chicken wire !

You may want to continue the mesh below ground level keep the Foxes from digging underneath. Depending on soil conditions you may want to increase the gauge of mesh to allow for corrosion.

You might like to check with local council. There are some rules about about keeping poultry on domestic premises. My neighbour was ordered to remove his run by the local public health officers on the grounds of health reasons.Too many jobsworth today.

Is there realy issues with keeping chickens? I realy dont like one of my neighbours, they keep chickens and summer time 5am they sure do make a noise. Thats not the only reason I dont like them

Thankyou very much, not like me to complain BUT they realy do take the mick where I live.

Is there a law against kennels aswell??? As in lots of dogs???

There is a guy local to us who keeps chickens. The one starts crowing at sunrise because the guy leaves the shutter open about 1/2" just to **** everyone off.

if its a cockrell and it isnt a smallholding or a farm u can have it removed go stretch its neck

Or use a catapault and feed it pellets dipped in Antifreeze

I have to agree with oz here. Someone close to my vicinity recently got some cockerels to complement the already noisy clucking Chickens they possess. Brilliant, just brilliant! Woken at 5.50am every morning, which will get earlier and earlier as dawn changes into summertime. Every waking hour is ruined by the constant screeching, then the second one croaks up in competition with the first. Brilliant! I partly work from home doing CAD and paper work, now im confined to having all the windows shut to get some peace on these lovely days, even then it does not drown it out. I can't concentrate due to the constant screeching of these damn things. On top of that im now confined in a stuffy house with no air getting through and i love my fresh air. I can't enjoy the garden without the peace being totally obliterated and my patience beng tried to the limit.

The morale of this is if you consider getting cockerels think twice about how it will effect others, If you don't, expect to fall out with a lot of people local with you.

If i could get away with it i would hop over the fence wring the dam necks of the lot of them. I am actually an animal lover but there are limits of how much selfish behaviour you can tolerate from people that have such small forward thinking of how it will affect others.
