I’d rather avoid lifting weights for a backplate - would you want to be stood next to a spinning chuck held on by the cheapest, poorest quality material available that only had to be strong enough to hold itself together for a weight block?
Cast iron is supposed to be better - both for the spindle nose, not getting jammed and for the dampening effect. Yes it’s not as cheap as steel but it seems to have been the original choice for original chucks and I think the old lathe makers knew what they were doing.
