MIG is probably the best. You need one that goes down to 30A or less and that uses gas as gas less burns to hot for panel work. Or oxy acetylene just like soldering realty.
What sort of money can you afford to spend Sean? Something like a clarke 135 would be a good start or a 160 if you think you might need the extra oomph at some point.
i need to get one as cheap asi can, my first viewing of welders were the cheap things at b & q, i was hoping to spend around £100ish , i would have more but my car has developed a few problems, one of them exhaust which i intend to be my first go, the other is gearbox so that is probably gonna dent my budget.
chance are the B&Q was an arc welder. Its not impossible to weld thin stuff with one there is a couple of threads on here about that but your unlikely to succeed in a weld good enough t5o fix any thing. If you are wanting to fix exhaust try chemical metal or brazing with a mapp blow torch Ive re pared a couple of radiators with one of these get the fluxed rods there reasonably easy to use nut over head is likely to be tricky.
Hi sean ,is it just an exhaust to weld?can u get it off the car?,exhausts are not easy to learn on but if its off the car thers is a few local who may do it cheap for you,,,,,£100 is not unreasonable for a 2nd hand 130,,,,trouble is they are like hens teeth ,unless you buy sip or seigen or aldi non of which would be recommended by the people on here that know what they are talking about.
i can easily take the exhaust off & i have a spare silencer to practice on, if i have spend a few quid then i will, i will just have to wait til payday,my philosophy is buy quality, however, i will only use it once in a blue moon so i dont need the best, i plan on getting good then buying a decent unit further down the path to enlightement, just need one that is gonna be an ok learner kit for now.
As wozz says 130amp min, with gas as gasless are not good for bodywork /thin steel,.....clarke,snap-on,cebora,sealey(red not seigen yellow)sip have a few problems ,try before you buy, make the seller demonstrate it working ,keep looking on e-bay and trade-it they do come up ,keep searching and reading on here you will find loads of good info to help you make a decision ,,,wish u luck Gav
