i managed to weld some stainless nuts onto a steel runner last year with my stick welder (mild steel rod). seemed to have strength good enough to bolt my seats to the runners, and after a year of HEAVY off-roading not one of em has come off
(it was very late when i did it and forgot that the nuts were stainless! i spent the whole time wondering why it was being so difficult to weld! lol)
No No No, disimlar in future please........
eh? sorry didnt understand that! n i cant use the excuse of it being late again!
possibly my earlier post wuold have made more sense if i had used different terms , carbide precipitation, inter granuler corrosion, compositional change and weld decay.
Look mate, its getting worse.
309L grade stainless steel is specifically designed to weld MS to SS, principally the 300 series but also 409. Thats it, end of story.

I'm with al on this, recommendations of M/S wire for dissimilar joints is just plain bad news, the 316 to M/S, with helium hmmm even worse......I think its the plain bad advice to DIYers thats got T/As goat....
