Hi All.....a seat in my house has what appear to be 4 cast ali legs....to night one snapped.
Question....what are my options.....is cast ali weldable or can I braze it with brass brazing rods......
You might get away with one of the "wonder rods" - Lumiweld, Durafix, or similar, and a propane torch, I've had some success on things like cast oil-cooler bosses*, making and adding brackets, piecing together cast ally covers. The usual: bit of a cleanup, bevel the edges of the crack/break, stainless wire brush again. then heat and scratch at the area (ideally with a bit of stainless rod, but a chromed screwdriver blade worked for me!) as you add the filler rod (so you break through the oxide layer), the composition of the rod actually lowers the melting point of the ally so it forms a proper weld pool, albeit a slightly different alloy!
I've done a few destructive tests on an inside corner, lap weld etc. done with it, it definitely penetrates the workpiece so it's a weld, not soldering/brazing.

*threaded bosses no problem - leave the steel banjo bolt in place, or a matching steel bold, build up the joint, unscrew the banjo - good thread!
