I have a class 3 mobility scooter which weighs nearly 150 kg. I have a flat bed trailer plus a small Erde trailer that can be used to carry it. Problem, however, is I need a trailer / carrier that is (a) lower to the ground than the Erde (b) length reduces when parked up.
Whilst I have other cars my main run around is a Smart Fortwo that I've already fitted a approved towbar (ouch money for a legal item !)
With the Smart being so short I want to be able to drive into a parking space, unload mobility scooter then reduce length of trailer so the overall length of car and trailer is no longer than a normal parking space. At present even the small Erde behind the Smart is longer than a parking space.
At the local hospital, where I have to attend sometimes 3 times a week, space is difficult to find plus nowhere to park a car and trailer. I do have a small folding mobility scooter that goes in the back of the Smart but it's a waste of time - barely has enough power to carry my bulk and then only on the flat.
I've therefore set myself the task of designing a purpose made trailer for the mobility scooter. Although people have them that allow loading from the side that is of no use unless the space to the side is clear leaving rear entry the only option.
I'm thinking of a "drop deck" load platform instead of needed ramps (I've got alloy folding items approx. 7' long). Deck on which the rear part folds up, when not loaded, to reduce length. That then leaves some way of reducing hitch length and that is where I'm struggling. This isn't for storage but whilst still attached to the car so it'll be able to park in one space. As such ease of operation important.
Any idea ?
Thanks.
Paul.
