Hi guys! Sorry to raise the whole Arc vs. Mig debate, I know it's been done to death (trust me, I reckon I've read every post on the forum), but I'd like to throw in an aspect that I don't think has been discussed before.
I'm currently within my first hear of (hobby) blacksmithing, with a coke forge. I am able to carry out the odd bit of forge welding here and there, but its a total PITA and is not always effective (and yeah, I know, practice makes perfect etc). In light of this, one of the guys who gives me pointers suggested I get a cheap Arc welder to help with welding and stuff. Having read the many posts on this forum, instead I'm thinking Mig may be the way to go.
To give you an idea of two extremes of the kind of work I'd want to be doing I've got a couple of examples;
1) Welding a 6" diameter steel tube with a 8mm wall thickness to a 10 mm plate (butt welded).
2) Welding a butt joint on a 10 mm round bar (end to end).
In summary, there'll be little work less than say; 5mm. with most of my work in the 5mm to 10 mm range.
My budget is £250. With a £50 quid contingency (in reserve for a decent mask) making the total £300.
Your help and pointers are, as always, very welcome.
