Hi, not sure if this is the right place, but I am sure admin will move it if not.
I rescued a grinder from a neighbour which turned but had a small amount movement in the bearings. He was going to dump it as it had been his dads and had sat in his garage for years, but I said I may turn it into a polisher so he let me have it.
It’s a 1/2HP 240v machine dated 1989. I got it apart, cleaned it up and was going to put shiny new screws in to make it look a bit nicer, but they are not metric. Hence stuck with the originals.
My quandary is that I got the bearings out and measured them with a Parkside digital micrometer, so not a precision instrument, but better than a ruler. They were 35mm/15mm and 11mm deep. New ones of that size were easy to find on eBay and bought. They are branded as Dunlop and sealed.
I’ve now fitted them, the slack has all gone but they were quite stiff to turn when first fitted. They now turn, but seem noisy for new bearings. Not really noisy, but not as silent as I expected.
Is this usual, will they have a ‘run in period’ or should I have measured with something a lot more accurate and expected them to be in Inches rather than mm? Or am I just expecting too much?
