Before i begin i apologise if this is in the wrong section
I'am just after some advice. i'am new to welding and wondering if i'am being a bit ahead of myself here. I'am 19 and have never done anywelding before although its something ive always really wanted to do. ive read loads of guides and this site has been usefull for information.
anyway ive got a 1990 bmw 325i convertible that needs alot of welding, i'am going to give it a bash myself, i feel confident enough that i can cut bits out with a grinder and create new patches etc, as i did this before with a bit of help around for my towing eye on my other e30. unfortunatly i didnt get a go at welding it in, i let someone else do that.
Most people would of scrapped the car but i wanted a project.
its payday on friday and i will be on the hunt for a welder, grinder, auto darkening mask etc.
i'am thinking of buying this
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190387172550&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
however there is a clarke 85enb gasless welder on ebay and i keep thinking prehaps a gasless would do??? are they really hopeless for car bodywork??? i relise they produce a fair bit of splatter but that doesnt really bother me, are they harder to use for beginners? Obviously i will do plenty of practising before i start, allready got loads of sheet metal ready.
another quesion ive got is, how hard is it to replace a whole arch lip? or is this best left to professionals?
the car's been stripped to this
here are the rusty areas that need sorting
not quite sure what to do with this bit yet, it hasnt spread into the cill itself its usually coverd up by a piece of trim
Allready cut some rot out, not very professional though
As you open the door
inner arch and outer arch
usually you would weld the car then build it back together but ive allready put it back together with an alpina theme.
the rot is all concentrated to the drivers side, wierd
i would appreciate Any advice or am i biting of more than i can chew i relise it may take a while giving i have no experiance
