Dear All
I am obviously new to the forum and am very impressed with your knowledge and willingness to help.
I am going to test your willingness to help with a few questions on my friends adr 300 if you don't mind.
Firstly I don't know how to tig weld but am a farmer of many talents (yes, and a master of none) and have been asked to help the setup of my friends welder.
Let's get the fundamentals right, the welder has 380/415v 1ph on the front. this to me says single phase (at 380/415 volts??! can't believe that) but it has L1 and L2 designated on the terminal panel inside. Perhaps it could be two phase? Or are these two terminals live and neutral? He has had it wired as two phase i.e. phases 1 and 2 going to the terminals so let's hope he hasn't blown it up! Smells all good though and it does kinda work........see next para. There are also two terminal wired up to the coils labelled 318 and 415 also one labelled 0 with no wires linked at all.
I have read about the HF circuit with the three steel contacts or points. He has adjusted these to 10 thou however some say on here it should be 25thou. Does anybody have a definitive answer?
This may all be academic when you hear this though....
between the left hand contact unit and the middle one the mica board has been burnt away from the top to halfway down. It is still rigid though and the points seem to stay at the correct adjustment. when the trigger is pulled on the lance and he has not struck an arc the right hand gap arcs but the left side has a 'web' of orange arcs across the lower portion of the burnt out mica.
I can't understand this, perhaps the mica is somehow damp and conductive or has some steel contaminating it in some way?
I think that is a pretty good puzzle for my first post on this forum and I really thank you in advance for any assistance you may provide for my friend via me.
Regards
Ben
