I am wondering how fast I can safely go. I have a 6 pole 1000rpm, 2.2kW motor on the lathe.
I have had the max speed set at 2200rpm/110hz for a long time, but a 3:1 reduction the spindle speed is a bit limiting and it could still use more torque for low speed parting. Im aware theres no increase in power above the design speed.
I'm reasonably sure the bearings wont complain below 4-5k rpm, and I dont think it will overheat - casing doesnt get warm, so this is more of an electrical question. The Optidrive E3 I believe is happy upto 400hz or more.
I have bumped it up to 135hz 2700rpm for now. Id like 3000rpm or higher
I could have got a faster motor but then it would need to be a much more powerful size to have the same low speed torque. Infact I think an 8 pole may be a good idea.
