I have a question regarding chucks.
Can someone please clarify "inside" and "outside" jaws.
The background to my question is that in my workplace we have a lathe with a three jaw chuck. The jaws are not reversible, so it has two sets of jaws (actually, it has 1 and 2/3 of a set of jaws, but I'll get to that in a moment).
If I wanted to hold say, a 100mm piece of pipe by its' inside surface I would use the "internal" jaws? (as it grips internally?)
Now, if I had a 250mm piece of pipe, the jaws above would not open far enough to hold my pipe, so I would exchange them for the "external" jaws?
I hope someone is still with me here, coz me heads in a spin. I'll explain;
Some numpty has lost one of the (what I've so far called) "external" jaws, which limits the diameter of workpieces that can be mounted on the machine.
I did my research, found the manufacturer (Bison), type and model and size and through our (not so) wonderful procurement department, purchased another set of what I understood to be "external" jaws.
I ended up with another set of what I thought of as "internal" jaws, which leaves me in a quandary. Am I mistaken in my understanding?
Any help would be very much appreciated.
