215 - Confused

Hi

After p'ing around with a hobby Clarke for a few years I've taken the plunged and asked Welequip to order me a Portamig 215, hope I've done the right thing!

I was going to order a Butters unit but all the opinions on this site have changed my mind.

Problem is the more I've read the more I've become confused

Can anybody tell me if the wire speed dial is for fine tuning? To put it another way if I leave the wire speed at 6 with a voltage selection of 1C 1F then change to 2C 6F will the wire feed speed change automaticaly?

Sorry if it seems daft to ask questions before I get the welder but I don't want to be disapointed with the unit just because I don't understand how it works!

The apparant Portamig bias on this site is purely historical - a few of upgraded from Clarkes to Portamigs a long while ago and decided they were very much nicer. I wish there were more people with Butters and other makes of welder about as I'd imagine any welder in the price range would be much nicer than a Clarke. Just we don't have side to side comparisons (yet) so I tend to assume they are all much of a muchness. (Apart from that very hefty wire feed on the Portamig).

Wire feed on the Portamig changes automatically and is quite accurate at doing it. I'll generally just swap the power settings and leave the fine tune as it is for the same type of weld on different thicknesses. Fine tune I'll use for different types of weld and different welding positions.

On top of the comments on this site, one of the deciding factors for me was that it's turned out that I only live about 15 mins drive from Weldequips place, it's comforting to know that backup is so close.

Very good choice then - having a good supplier nearby is worth a lot. I've not found a good suppliers close to me (few and far between) so tend to do mail order with weldequip.
