I am not to sure where to post this but I was just on another forum (vzi) and noticed someone had posted that "aldi" are selling german cutting discs for £3.99.If I have posted in the wrong section "sorry in advance"
Obviously not German then. The proper, German manufactured (Dronco etc.) 1.0mm discs are outstanding....cost over twice that price, but last 5X longer
weldequip
I just started using the thin discs for cutting, I will never, ever go back to normal ones......................ever!!! I think I pay quite dear for them though as there is nobody else in my area selling them, I think I normally pay around 80-90p each for 6" But if you use them wisely and don't force them too much they last not too bad. Certainly beats the hell out of a hacksaw! Will pop in over the weekend and see if they have any in our local store, I have shed loads of material to cut over the next couple of weeks and when the discs are burned down quite a bit they are excellent for cutting circular holes,
I have posted before on these discs, First time I saw them I thought ,great price and bought a few packs for stock, I too was mislead by the made in Germany, They don't last long and you get showered with disintigrating disc grit.will stick to B.O.C. or Arrow etc in future,
Bought 25 x 1mm discs from BOC tradeequip outlet for 12.50+Vat a couple of weeks ago, they are Flex-o-vit ones and they are absolutely brilliant.
I've cut 2-3m of 3mm steel plate and not used a full disk yet! Cuts 3mm like a knife thru butter, and so quick and clean with minimal heat as well. In comparison some cheap silverline (eugh!) discs I bought lasted about 30 secs before disintegrating into a pile of grit and webbing, probably only lasted enough to cut 20-30cm's into the same 3mm plate as the other discs, horrible horrible things!
I'd say to anyone looking for a good quality 1mm discs try them, they are much better than Norton ones I have also tried.
Also I'll add in a punt for my budget grinder from screwfix, made by Makita, sold under the "Site" brand, its a brilliant little grinder, loads of power and cost me under £25 on offer from screwfix a few months ago, bought a jigsaw from them as well for £80 with some metal blades to cut more of that 3mm plate, also highly recommended for a no frills worktool.
I like the bluspot 1mm discs. They last alot longer than some of the other discs I've used. I use about 10 discs a day, but when I switched to bluspot I only used 1-2 a day.
thats your opinion bob, most people who use them are diyers, on a budget and want something that'll do the job. which they do. fait enough they dont last very long, there rather dusty but for the price what more do you expect.
btw have you actually tried them, or are you just guessing they are sh1t by the price.
what discs do you use then?
i am sure people will have an opinion on those, even if they are the best on the market and cost £4 a piece.
give us a reason why you think they are rubbish and a waste of money. they cut steel at the end of the day, thats the reason we bought them.
i used a couple the other day on a toyota land cruiser. they are rather dusty but tbh i can handle that. i am gonna try them against some of the better (more expensive) disks tomorrow to compare qualities etc
i used mine today and yes got to agree they are rather dusty and dont last long but for that sort of money you cant go wrong for the likes of me that is only diy they do just fine they cut nice and straight but as for comparison against dronco of flexovit they simply dont compare but i must admit i do like dronco i dont know what sort of price they are but the fitter at work gives me a couple of dronco disks now and again when i see him but if push came to shove for me i would buy cheap disks because im diy only but if i was self employed it would be dronco or the likes ian
I bought some disks using the offer from Smith & Arrow. They had a label on them telling me to put the disks in the grinder with the label facing the grinder. Supposed to prevent premature disk wear and possible breakage. I didn't know this.
