15kg Butane Gas Bottle Shot Blaster

Hi all, has anyone ever made a shot blaster from a butane/propane gas cylinder? I am thinking of making one but I am unsure on how they are plumbed internally. Before anyone shouts "Health & Safety!". I know how to make the bottle safe. I will open the valve to drain the gas, (nearly empty anyway). Then remove the valve and fill with cold water to remove all the gas before I start fabricating. What I would like to know, is how the blast medium is fed from the cylinder to the nozzle and if the cylinder is permanently pressurised.

This is the basic setup

T, B and L are 3/8 bsp lever operated ball valves, the air comes in top left and the grit & air go out bottom right.

The mixer is an ordinary malleable iron t-piece.

heres one of mine .the pot and blast hose up to the jet is pressurised u can make a simpler one using a ball valve for metering the media but there not as consistent and use a screw on filler cap if your in no great rush

just go down machine mart and look one over and u will get a better idea of them

What is the thing on the bottom that seems to be made of layers of steel bolted together?

its the home made sand valve in stead of a ball valve . u can regulate more acurately and have less blockages using one. there. normaly fitted to the comercial mini pots . these on the last picture are cheaper and can be bought but not as good

Worth mentioning, you're better with a propane rather than a butane bottle as they are fitted with a standard thread (1/2 BSP I think) rather than the non-standard thread used on butane.

Just wondering if the bottle is 1/2 bsp what's the reason for 3/8 bsp ball valves ? Does that mean you use a reducer ? This is where a get lost thanks Vinny

The thread on a propane bottle is 1/2 bsp (?) the "ebay pots" use 3/8, they are made specially for the job.

Just use 1/2 (?) inch fittings instead with a propane bottle.

to make any real progress 80cfm is a bare minimum

3hp 14 cfm will work a 2.5mm nozzle. I use a 3hp and 2hp compressors together and it's a bit painful doing panels, but ok for things like hubs where most the grit from a bigger nozzle will miss anyway.

New to the forum and I'm thrilled to find this thread as I've just purchased a large compressor with a view to using it for blasting.

BRIGHTSPARK, can you tell me what you use for the blasting hose and gun? Also, where do you get those twist lock air couplings from please? Can't seem to find them anywhere!

hi and welcome . what size compressor have u got . how many cfm is it and what horsepower motor does it have fitted that will determine what fittings and hose size is used . allso the corect blast jet size

, But ive got a couple of questions, Im going to use a hydrovane ( towable type) compressor borrowed off a builder friend so pressure isnt a problem, My gas bottle had a 3/4bspt so ive used 3/4 fittings, Can i use the yellow hose that are used with these type of compressors for the breaker guns etc for a blast hose (3/4 inside dia), im building the pot to blast the underside of my campervan currently laying on its side on the drive :laughing:

, so what size nozzle should i be using and any idea where i can get the holder and nozzles from ?. will a water filter that ive got plumbed in for spraying/ air tools ( similar to the one on your pot ) be man enough for this type of compressor ? ive used this type of compressor on building sites and the moisture that comes out the guns is horrendous !! I'm using 3/4 in bore car heater hose and it lasts ages.

i use the 3/4 bore hose up to a half inch water seperator on the pot then down to the mixing chamber tee piece can be half inch bore and the blast hose is half inch with a 6mm blast nozzle. compressor is a 90cfm , the dimensions are the same as a clemco mini pot

what u will find is run the compressor for a while till the air comes out of the airline warm conected to the pot .water collects in the seperator till the whole system is warm then runs water free

once u are away it will run all day without any problems the hose and jet fittings along with brass coupling can be had from clemco or try another supplier to see if u can obtain cheaper

got all my fittings sorted today, Im quite confident of my welding but belts and braces and all that for the top outlet im using a 1inch to 3/4 inch adapter with the inch going through the pot with a 3/8 rubber gasket an a nice big nut to hold it :cool:
