I wanted to make a plate with captive studs on it, that I could then weld in place. So I used countersunk head screws. I ground flats in the sides of the screw heads so that the weld could penetrate, and ground back the weld metal so the plate would site flat.
But I found that it didn't...

At college, I got to use my instructor's TiG, and gosh it's good technology!
