I've been using a 3.2m TIG tungsten electrode in a Faber-Castell clutch pencil for a while now, which works pretty well. The tungsten keeps a decent point, is easy to resharpen, whilst the pencil makes it easier to hold and a little less of a liability.
Hi All,
Its been a while since I've posted anything here but recently I had a request (given a challenge more like!) to build a weathervane in the form of a De Havilland DH.88 Comet. So the first place I went looking for info on making a weathervane was this forum. Having benefited from what...
If you do go for the ebook, just to let you know when I bought a copy with paypal the download page timed out before I could download the PDF. I emailed him with my payment ref, date/time, explaining what happened and he emailed me back with an apology and the download link. Probably took a...
If you're looking to start a mobile welding business it would be worth taking a look at the website: http://www.markthewelder.co.uk/ there is a ton of information on there about making a living from welding and in particular mobile welding. Things like calculating break even figures, finding...
Sorry about that brokenbiker, but it'll be a fun first tig project.
No need to worry silversurfer, we checked she wouldn't fit through before I finished it all. The widest any of the gaps are is about 105mm, so pretty close to the 100mm required by building regs on balustrades and stairs. To...
Its been a while since I've had any non-work related projects to contribute, but recently I was asked by my parents if I could make a pond cover to help make their garden a bit more child friendly, now that my niece is just about to start walking and is into exploring everywhere.
As I was going...
Cheers for the comments guys.
Shox Dr - good suggestion, I hadn't even thought of doing that. I wouldn't even need to take that much off to get them to work - probably less than 1mm each side, could even stick them on the mill at work and rip along them rather than using an angle grinder.
Hi All,
I've been wanting to build myself a fabrication table for a while, and have finally got round to making one. So I thought I might post up some pics of it, to join the numerous other welding tables projects scattering the internet.
At work we recently had a bit of a clean up of the...
Hi,
Having had a bit of a rubbish weekend I thought I'd break out the ol' welder late this afternoon and see if I could take out my fustrations on some scrap metal and hopefully come out with something positive at the end.
I've got a whole heap of odd shape off-cuts resulting from...
Hi All,
Firstly thanks for the advice. We had another crack at un-twisting the stringers this morning and the results were alot better.
This time rather than fixing one end to the welding bench and applying the twisting force at the other and trying to treat the whole lenght in one go...
Hi,
I don’t know if this is the right section of the forum to post this up in, but it's related to architectural steelwork. I’ve got a quick question I’m hoping some of the forum members might be able to help with.
At work we’ve got a pair of steel steps that we’ve fabricated. The...
Continuing the plant theme
Hi there,
Another couple of flowers made from offcuts of scrap, this time from large-ish diameter tube (150-200 mm dia). I've tried adding some patterning with the welder, hopefully the blobs will mellow in when the pieces rust up and add a nice bit of texture...
Yup just read the PM and sent a reply - thanks.
I think I quite like the idea of using offcuts, or weirdly shaped pieces of structural sections. Luckily at my new job I've be given the go ahead to rummage through the scrap bins so I'll be exploring this further I think.

Something a little simpler
Hi,
Was chopping up some steel angle at work and some of the offcuts were quite interesting shapes, which got me thinking. So I took them home and after some playing around with different arrangements to see what they might want to become and adding a little rebar...
Thanks for the kind words.
Yup I cut quite a few tube miters over a fortnight in preperation for I welding course I was goin on year this year, and kept the off-cuts just in case they could be used for something. I finally found a use for them, and got about half way before running out of...
Hi all,
Recently I’ve been trying my hand at making some sculptures as a fun way to practice welding and using up a supply of tubing that was kindly donated, and thought they might be of interest to the creative types on here.
First up is a little alien spider type thing, made from tube...
Hi All,
Having recently found this forum I've been avidly looking through all the different projects people have put up.. such a great resource for ideas and information!
So having enjoyed what others have posted I though I'd post some pics of my first proper TIG project - a logging saw...
