so I had a bit of a Bozo on the lathe this evening. I had the carriage hard up against the headstock to make room to get in with the tailstock and a centre. I was tapping a deep hole in some EN58 with a M20 tap so I had the lathe in the lowest backgear. Afterwards I left the lathe in low gear to use a countersink to chamfer the hole when I accidentally lent on the half nut engagement lever.
There is supposed to be a shear pin in the leadscrew but that held and I ended up stripping 4 teeth on the compound gear.
The gear is a 96/40 and appears to be pressed together.
What are people suggestions for a fix? It's a Cardif lathe so getting branded spares is not really an option. I could modify something close from a suitably sized lathe (Triumph etc) but I don't know how to mesasure the Mod pitch on the teeth.
