If you are studying engineering and you want to do cars then most likely it's a bug (excuse the pun) that isn't going to go away.
I would buy the best you can afford.
My first welder, (bought to weld a VW Bay window) I splashed out £400 on a Migatronic about 13 years ago and I still using it today. I was butt welding bodywork the first day I had it because it ran so well.
I did have a 1/3 share in a cheap SIP before and that didn't work out on many levels. Spent more time getting it weld well than actually welding. the other members didn't want to pay to maintain it.
From everything I've read if I was buying new today I would probably buy a Portamig,Oxford or an R-Tech(because they are close-ish and have a really good service reputation)
I'll try to get the best I can afford, but will probably be around the £200-300 mark if possible because I'm trying to save up for a car and stuff... and I will need money for tools etc.
