I though you all would like a laugh. The earth clamp on my Wolf 200amp stick welder was giving up the ghost. No worries, I'll buy another from ebay and so got the entire lead with that funny connector thing for the welder. 300 amp rated load it said, great, just the job and so I purchased it. It arrived and so I plugged it in and started a weld on my jaw rock crusher which was with a full 4mm rod. I normally kick off at 200 amps and then when the puddle is going well knock it back down to around 180 amps or so. Got about 1/2 way through the rod and starting thinking it was a bit smokey inside the helmet, but continued to concentrate with the weld, got to the end and starting coughing and found the earth lead was melted away from one end to the other and actual fire at one point. (Which I blew out) The copper conductor looks like it's 2.5 mm tops - why do they make such crap! Insterstingly the earth clamp is good quality and so I'll get some more proper cable and make my own. I've asked for a return on ebay and I'm 99% sure they won't want it back and just refund me.
