Battery on - earth clamp near work - no TIG HV - no MMA hotstart - low wound coil MIG voltages safer.
Well I ran out of MIG wire on a Sunday and tacked cill repair patches on my S600 with an arc inverter welder, hot start etc. It has 56 ECUs and no problems.
There is no hard and fast rule IMO. Just put the earth near welding area and battery disconnected. That works for me all the time. If I am particularly paranoid I will also disconnect the main Engine and Transmission ECUs in my classics where I know they are now unobtanium.
