I have just acquired a small Boxford lathe, without a motor, and I need some help form an electrical wizard.
I think it has had a 3 phase motor in the past judging by the number of wires and there was still an fwd/rev switch mounted on the stand.
I have a small single phase motor which fits on and works.
I am not entirely sure of the size of this motor as it does not show on the plate KW,HP or amps, it only confirms it is single phase 240v, 1450 rpm and 50Hz, but there is also Wo 180 A1.5. The motor was made by G.E.C machines ltd.
The motor is still wired from its previous job and fitted with a 13amp plug flex and on removal of the plate negative is wired to A1 and positive A2, there is also an earth.
I think it is known as an induction motor with a primary and secondary winding and there is no capacitor, I can see the centrifugal switch in the back.
I would like to know if this motor can run forwards and backwards and if so how do I do it?
Also will I be able to use the switch that came with it? If I do a continuity test on the switch when the pointer is vertical up or down there is no continuity across any of the terminals, turn it to the left or right and you can complete a circuit, the outlet of this circuit changes with the direction of the switch. I don’t know the make of this switch but I have taken some pictures which I will post later on tonight.
Any help gratefully appreciated.
