Having experienced a few power cuts lately I've bought a 9 kW 240 volt single phase generator, a 125 amp two pole generator change over isolator switch and an appropriate wall mounting input male plug.
We are on a PME supply, and have an already existing isolator switch. Live and neutral are nicely accessible from the output of this isolator where the L&N cables going to my consumer unit can be moved to the output of my new switch and the mains input of my switch wired to where these cable previously were.
The earthing is mechanically not so simple - an earth cable comes from the boards main fuse assembly (Outside meter box) and disappears into the wall towards my consumer unit with no accessible connection point.
At the moment I'm thinking, sever this earth, fit it to an earth bus bar so that it is still continuous, and take my earth for my generator input socket from this bus bar, which will probably be one of the bars from a 'Henley Block' screwed to the meter box backboard.
Does this break hundreds of rules? I'm thinking there is something saying no joints in the earth cable maybe.
An alternative would be a 'Line Tap' (think I've got some somewhere!) which would be easier and leave the original earth cable continuous.
Constructive comments please.
