Trailer mod

I have been asked by a friend if I can extend the nose of this trailer so he can shift his boat about; a 15 minute journey. I think on private roads.
Not entirely convinced here.

I'd be inclined to phone the local trailer hire company and ask how much it is for a days hire for a boat trailer. Then proceed from there , personally I wouldn't touch that mainly because it needs totally rebuilding including a frame to hold the boat, before the tow bar mod....

That's just to much work for mates rates
ie....free....

It'd be better and safer to extend the rear. You used to get extended rear sections for those old trailers for holdng hay/straw bales. Some heavy box section or channel goes inside the tipping bed main backbone, bolted on and a good fit into the existing channels, and you build your extension on that. At least that way, if it fails, the trailer doesn't fall off the tractor...

there's no "nice" way to extend the nose without significant extra stress on re-welded sections. Unless you replaced the entire drawbar section for new... still a bad idea IMO.

Is this going to a multipurpose trailer or just used for boat hauling ?
If just for boat then ditch the tilt top and build a boat rack on the chassis that is long enough without extending hitch.

As I believe it was @Munkul said, you’d be better off taking the tilt off the top and extending rearwards.

Only done it once, for “personal” use off road so we could get 18ft sticks on the trailer safely - most of our stuff is uphill

I'd say that's how it was made originally tbh, we've had several that have that same drop from the main chassis to the drawbar. I'd be taking the tiper top off and making a frame to suit, but I've modified plenty to lengthen between the axle and drawbar, lengthen the drawbar or added on the back with no issues, as ong as you fishplate the joins and weld it well.

Private roads are very rarely actually exempt road laws.

All road use trailers over 750kg MLPM must have brakes.

Farm trailer have an exemption that if I remember correctly allows the un braked trailer MLPM to go up to 50% of the tractors weight.
