My brother tried cataloguing his bike parts, tools and projects back in the 70's and I have thought in the past about using the PC to do similar. I still have boxes with labels on that my brother catalogued, they have been in 3 different houses and back to the first one unopened other than to see what is inside as the catalogue is long gone and sadly so is my brother. I decided not ventured any further into the idea of cataloguing on the PC due to the amount of time it would consume and I find storage boxes with their contents on adequate for most things stored in various places from workshop to sheds dependant on frequency of use.
I am currently in the middle of a 'workshop restructure' (clearout, tidy and sweep up! ). A lot of my materials are offcuts and now in Tote Pans stacked awaiting some form of moveable racking where I can see in each bin easily with material type marked on the front. In truth, I would probably be better off getting rid of most of what I have and buy new when required as it will probably never be used and some is likely older than me. The scrap bin has always played a major part in my life both at home and work as the first place to look for materials, I now make an effort to bin the scrap and store the useful offcut in the Tote Pans as I collated a few scrap bins.
Something happened to me a couple of years ago whilst helping a friend who does house clearances. I was sat in this guys lockup garage going through drawers and shelves of bike & car parts, tools and engineering equipment, a whole lifetimes collection from different trades and I would lay money he could tell a story for most if not all of it as can I with mine. I had a constant stream of questions asked of me as to what things were or what they would be used for from the other lads doing the clearance. It suddenly occurred to me that one day someone would have to do that for me and something I find useful or valuable may have no value or usefulness to another. Since then I have been looking at everything I own with a view to that day in the future.
