Just had a look in the book:-I have my eye on a J&S 540 surface grinder. But i need to know what weight it is before i make a bid on it.
Online i have seen estimates between 750kg to 1100kg.
Anyone know for sure ?
I wouldn't want to risk rope, if the op goes with the purchase i am happy to see what length slings fit best and upload a pic cant remember what combination i used last. The handbook warns against lifting
solely by eye bolts at the top of the rear column. A rope should be
threaded through these eye bolts and then passed under the two hook
shaped casting extensions located each side of the front of the
machine a bit below the cross feed handle. Finally returned to the
first eye bolt
Make sure EVERYONE involved in the move knows not to lift by the table AT ALL. It just sits on it's ways BUT the double ended hydraulic actuator is fixed to the base and the ends on the table. ANY lifting on the table results in a bent actuator rod.
Was watching (what i suspect was) the same one, I see someone good a good deal if its in ok condition! My new workshop is just ready now to roll in machinery over the coming while. I couldn't justify a surface grinder being the first machine in the door as i wouldn't have the work for it. Didn't stop me wanting it though! I had to get the Mrs to talk me out of going for it!
A fair few years ago I had my 48” plough grinder moved.Make sure EVERYONE involved in the move knows not to lift by the table AT ALL. It just sits on it's ways BUT the double ended hydraulic actuator is fixed to the base and the ends on the table. ANY lifting on the table results in a bent actuator rod.
A surface grinder is more than just a surface grinder. You can sharpen reamers and other cutters and fit a spin fixture and perform small scale cylindrical grindingYou gotta love this forum
There is a J&S surface grinder not far from me ATM and the price is very tempting.
Did a Google search on how heavy it would be and the No.1 hit was this very thread
So, do I need one, No
Would Iike one, Yes
Have I got space for it, Nope
So do I buy it? It's just too tempting and finding it very hard to resist
I have had a couple of surface grinding jobs done locally, not expensive and paid cash, I do have 2 more jobs lined up and it would do these quite nicely but then what
We are being de industrialised and by return we buy junk back
They are getting in short supply. How do I know? Because we have a customer who gets us to collect them from all over the country to load into containers going out to India and China.
We ship about 2 or 3 every week so that means every year there are 150 less out there.
He mainly ships the 540 but also the 923 and the Myford.
Unfortunately it’s just too dear to run a business that needs space, energy and workers over here.People keep knocking British industry and buy foreign so what can we expect?
I’d like a big Lang a4 or a big swift lathe . I’ve been looking for five years with a open cheque book . There’s none left export or the big pot.Someone has an advert here looking for all types of engineering machinery for export, it hacks me off. I was planning to buy a new lathe next year, hard to do if they are all in a manky sweat shop in bombay.
