My 4,1/2" grinder failed with sparks and soot this afternoon.
I pulled it apart and it seems to be a "suppression capacitor" that's gone (or at least that's what made the fireworks)
Learnt a bit from this thread;
http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/threads/replacement-capacitor-for-angle-grinder.73274/
Matches my scenario spot on;
So I can get a capacitor from power tool spares.....
..but the machine has had a tough enough life and I'm not sure it's worth me forking out 1/3 the cost of a new one on a component.
So the question, what does the capacitor suppress? Can I bypass it to test the rest of the motor (or even run it like it)??
I can't see much in the way of specifications on the duff capacitor but maybe I could fit a non OEM one for "worth a try" cost?

When my foam saw packed up I had lots of buzzing, sparks coming from the sides,a burning smell, then it stopped working.When I took it apart the suppresser had burn marks on the sides and smelt of burning, when I replaced it all was well again.
