Today I had a good one.
All signed on, all briefed up, again. Big building site.
New extinguishers given out, the site 2 safety workers took them away and fitted them were they should go. according to a plan.
The old ones are brought back to use to survey, recharge or junk as needed.
We hand a stand pipe for the water. A suitable waste drain for the contents of the foams and water units
So there we were, nitrogen bottle all set up to re charge. when the H&S manger lady ran out screaming.
"Stop.!!!!! STOP!!!!!"
We did. The H&S guys with us looked and rolled their eyes.
She started yelling at us; "You can not use an inflammable gas to charge the extinguishers as it is very dangerous and we do not have flammable gas on site."
We tried to explain it was an inert gas, called nitrogen and would not burn, etc etc.
Her answer.
"I have done the gas bottle course, all flammable gas bottles have 2 gauges on them. To shown content and pressure, are you dub or what?"
On that comment, we packed up, left.
Not after leaving her with paper work explaining her site is no longer able to operate as it does not reach standard for fire extinguisher cover. So all work is to stop, until the site reaches standard, as you have told us we are not capable of doing such work and asked us to leave.
That was at 10:30am.
11:30am we were back, not one person was working.
We cracked on, got the work done, she glared at us all the time.
As we left, site boss came up to us and apologised to us both and explained she will be answering so questions and redoing a lot of training.
That was at 10:30.
That sums it up nicely.
The old saying " a little knowledge is a dangerous thing"
You can't just train someone to do a gas course if they don't understand basic chemistry. Certificate or not.
