My first welder was a sip 150...bought from halfrauds...gave up on welding for 15 years! Finally decided to give it another go and bought a Kemppi....beautiful machine...expensive but best purchase ever.
Love a good MK1 escort...I will be watching this build closely. Still can't believe back in the day they were being thrown away for nothing when the MK2 s and then the MK3s came out.
Mate that SIP was a pain in the ****. It was my first MIG and I just couldnt grasp welding with it. Did the feed roller brace, seperate PSU mod (constant laptop type) with added solenoid, even replaced the circuit board with a new PWM board but just couldn't get a decent constant weld with it. Ended up buying a 'euromig 200' secondhand cheap and its just a different matter altogether. So many people must use SIPs and just give up.
As for escorts being throwaway back in the day I have no problem believing it, they were just cheap crappy and not very complex family runabouts that rusted quickly. What I struggle with is the ridiculous prices they swap hands for these days, goes against the whole escence of the car as a cheap easily modified working mans daily driver turned competition car which is what made them so popular in the first place. Ironic really
