I've always wanted to weld. I have no professional need to do so, but, like plumbing or painting and decorating, I like to be self sufficient. So where to start? There's a good few books out there, but none of them start from the position of comparing welding methods and advising a beginner on where to begin and, more specifically, which technique/path to tread. Should I buy an arc welder and learn that method, or should I spend my cash on a MIG welder and learn that? What are the pros and what are the cons?
I'm happy to purchase good kit, but - in truth - it won't be heavily used. I have no interest in cars or their repairs, but I do have a need to repair stuff like gate hinges; weld angle brackets and generally mend garden equipment, etc.
So TIG or Arc? your advice will be much appreciated.
