I bought a zinc plating kit not so long ago and thought I would put some pics up of the results I am getting from it.
I got passivate in Gold/Blue/Black and Olive Drab. The Yellow/gold sometimes has adhesion problems which can be fixed by doing it in the clear/blue first. The clear blue stuff gives a chrome like finish if you get the underlying metal correct. If you leave it longer it goes from clear to a blued chrome finish which gives a nice effect.
Once its pasivated using a bit of autosol removes any cloudiness and gives a really nice lasting lustre.
Here are some indicator stalks I made for a friends AJS restoration project. These were done on my mini lathe. 20mm round bar turned down to 18mm and polished the drilled through to 6.5mm and then tapped each end to M8x1.25.
