Hi All,
I’ve been lurking for a few months now and this is my first post.
I’ve been MIG welding on a self-taught, hobby basis for about 17 years now. I’m no expert and in reality those 17 years mean very little. This site is a great resource and I’d appreciate advice from those of you with real practical hands on knowledge.
I’m looking for a new MIG welder and also an AC/DC TIG welder to broaden the scope of what I can do in the shed.
While the inverter units look very tempting, and I would imagine a quality machine would last me years as a hobbyist. I’ve decided to go for a non-inverter MIG along the lines of an Oxford MIGMAKER 240-1.
When it comes to the TIG machine, the decision is a lot more difficult. Price is the main issue, and although I’m tempted by the R Tech type inverter machines, conservatism is leaning me towards something along the lines of a TECTIG AC/DC 225. There are many contributors to the Forum who recommend getting second hand equipment as this opens the window to higher end machines. As I’ve no experience and little knowledge of TIG welding, I wouldn’t be in a position to test anything prior to purchase, so think it’s best to stick to a new machine.
Any sound advice would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Ian.
